Learning guide

Understanding care across the life course.

MCHF’s reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health programme connects stages of life that are often discussed separately. The strategy treats information, community support and access to services as parts of one continuum.

IN THE SIERRA LEONE CONTEXT

Local knowledge. Shared priorities.

In Sierra Leone, a connected approach brings family and community perspectives into conversations about care through adolescence, pregnancy, birth and childhood.

Listen to women and young people

Start with the questions, experiences and priorities people share in their own communities.

Connect local services

Consider how community health workers, peripheral health units and referral facilities can support continuity.

Plan for different settings

Include rural, island, border and urban communities when exploring practical barriers to access.

Meet our national focus

Planning considerations for MCHF’s programme framework. Confirmed delivery locations and activities are listed with each published project.

UNDERSTAND THE APPROACH

Understanding care across the life course.

MCHF’s reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health programme connects stages of life that are often discussed separately. The strategy treats information, community support and access to services as parts of one continuum.

01

What is a continuum of care?

A connected approach from adolescence and reproductive health through pregnancy, birth and early childhood. Each stage has different needs, and coordination helps people move between relevant services.

02

Why information and choice matter

The plan prioritises youth-friendly information, voluntary and informed family-planning choices, respectful maternal care and community understanding of available services.

03

What a referral connects

Community support helps people understand where services are available. Referral pathways connect this support with appropriate facilities and follow-up, rather than treating outreach as a stand-alone activity.
